What is Laser Hair Removal?
Laser hair removal is a cosmetic, Aesthetics procedure that offers excellent results in permanent hair reduction for many areas of body hair. At Derma HUB, we use the very best laser technology to treat all skin types (from light to dark) to remove unwanted hair. Laser hair removal is clinically proven to leave you with hair free skin.

How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?
Before revealing the specificities of the different lasers, let us explain how they work:

Laser produces a light beam at a specific and precise wavelength which targets the melanin pigment of the hair. The melanin then absorbs this energy and converts it into heat. As a result the heat destroys the hair follicle, which means that it can never grow back. The more melanin, the more effective the laser will be. The epidermis remains intact and the surrounding tissues are not damaged.

Once the hair follicle has been destroyed, it is almost impossible for future growth to take place. 80-95% of hair is removed during the treatment, although this can depend on the client’s age and the area being treated. It is worth noting that Laser hair removal is not suitable for blonde, white, gray, or red hairs because lasers are not effective on light-colored hair.
Laser treatment for body and face hair is safe and effective. It is a wonderful, long-term alternative for women and men who are frustrated or experience problems with traditional shaving.

The Alexandrite laser
The Alexandrite is a semi-precious stone that filters light at a wavelength of 755 nm. This wavelength corresponds to the maximum absorption peak of melanin. As a result, the light beam penetrates the hair root very precisely without needing a high level of intensity.
All scientific studies agree that the Alexandrite is currently the laser that offers the most convincing results on fair and medium skin types.

The Nd-Yag laser
Nd-Yag is the most appropriate laser for the treatment of dark skin types. This laser works at a wavelength of 1064 nm, which has a low level of absorption by melanin and therefore the light beam penetrates deeper into the hair root.
The thermal effect on the hair is low and ensures a high level of intensity. This laser is recommended for long-term hair removal on dark skin or deeply rooted hair.

The Diode Laser
The Diode Laser, which is much less efficient than the Alexandrite, operates on a wavelength from 810 to 980 nm, so it has a wider spectrum than the Alexandrite and the Nd-Yag.
This wavelength has a low level of absorption by melanin and therefore the light beam penetrates deeper into the hair root.
The lower absorption by melanin is both an advantage (tanning and skin pigmentation are not greatly affected) and a disadvantage (lighter and finer hairs resist the treatment).

Are there other techniques available for permanent or long-term hair removal?
IPL technology, or Intense Pulsed Light, is not laser, and often confused with laser hair removal. These two hair removal techniques are very different, both in terms of safety and effectiveness.
IPL -Intense Pulsed Light
The lamps used in IPL provide less selective, less powerful and more diffused light than lasers. Since the pulsed light is much less strong it only weakens the hair follicles, and therefore cannot guarantee a permanent result.
Therefore, the results are often temporary and disappointing for the client, and it also has a significant risk of burn marks.
… versus laser
The laser, on the other hand, emits a powerful, more selective energy beam that completely destroys the hair follicle. This makes the treatment truly permanent.
Laser hair removal is the only technique that can guarantee you a permanent, safe and effective solution for unwanted hair growth.
Derma HUB opted to utilize a Triple Wavelength Laser technology that combines Alexandrite, Diode and ND-YAG. This type of technology stack is highly efficient for permanent hair removal on all 6 Fitz Patrick skin types, from light to the darkest skin tones.
It is important to be well informed about the different techniques of permanent hair removal before you make your choice.

How Many Sessions Are Necessary For The Treatment To Be Effective?
Often clients see the effects of the treatment after the very first session. However, to achieve the full effects you are looking for you will need multiple sessions. We generally recommend 5-8 treatments to effectively remove all hair, with 4 to 6 weekly intervals. Laser hair removal works on actively growing hair, therefore continual treatment is necessary to remove new hair growth.
We recommend you make an appointment for a consultation at our clinic to accurately determine the number of sessions needed to achieve the results you are looking for.
Free Consultation, without obligation.
Why Is The Initial Consultation So Important?
Our professional Technicians are available to provide consultations to answer any questions you might have. Your first consultation is free of charge. Our Technicians will study your skin and hair and will prepare a personalized treatment plan based on your needs.

The initial consultation is an information session that allows you to find out everything you need to know about laser hair removal. The Laser Technician will check whether you meet all the conditions to achieve optimal results from laser treatment (skin type, hair colour, age, any hormonal concerns, medications prescribed etc.). The technician will also ask a series of questions about you in order to get to know you better.
The initial consultation is therefore really important to ensure the treatment is successful as laser hair removal is long term. This meeting is also an opportunity for you to ask the technician any questions that you may have.
At the end of this meeting, you will have everything you need to decide whether you wish to begin with laser hair removal treatment. A detailed quote will be provided according to the areas you wish to treat and you can set a date for your first laser treatment session with your technician.
The technician will also inform you of what you need to do for your sessions.

It is important to note that no treatment will take place during the first consultation.

You should not shave before your consultation appointment as the technician will need to see the colour and thickness of the hair.

Are There Any Contraindications For Laser Hair Removal?
There are only a few but they should be respected to ensure effective, completely safe laser treatment:
-
No exposure to sun or sunbeds for the entire duration of the treatment. If the area to be treated is tanned, the treatment cannot be carried out as there is a greater risk of burning in this case.
-
Treatments cannot be performed on pregnant women.
-
Areas affected by infectious inflammation cannot be treated.
Tattooed areas (or permanent make-up) cannot be treated. Treatment can only be performed around the tattooed area which will consequently retain any hair.
Recommendations Before Your Laser Treatment Session
We have made a list of the most important recommendations that are useful for you to know before starting a laser treatment:
-
Exposure to the sun should be avoided at all costs during the entire treatment. The sun activates the melanin in the skin which is targeted by the laser, and this can therefore cause burn marks.
-
For the same reasons, it is necessary to stop self-tanning.
-
Also, for one month before the treatment, avoid hair removal methods that affect the hair root, such as waxing, tweezers, depilatory cream, sugar wax, etc. However, it is advisable to shave 2 to 3 days before the treatment, except when the treatment area is the face. Shaving will make the hairs finer and thus better targets for the laser.
-
The hair must be short (maximum 1 mm) because it serves as the laser conductor.
-
Be sure to inform your laser consultant of any medication you are taking. In the case of photosensitising medication, the laser must be adjusted differently.
-
It is important not to wear any new unwashed clothing for a week before the treatment, as it can leave small pigments on the skin to which the laser will respond.
-
The skin should be dry and free of cosmetics. The use of a numbing cream (such as Emla) can prevent a successful result. The patient’s sensation is used as a barometer to determine the optimal energy of the laser and thus avoid burn marks.
-
Tattooed skin is not a contraindication for laser hair removal. We simply take special precautions (application of a plaster over the tattoo) to avoid burn marks.
Will It Hurt?
Laser hair removal is NOT really a painful procedure. Most of our clients report that it is much less painful than waxing. Your experience can depend on how large the area of treatment is, and the duration of the session. Most sessions last only a few minutes. As the machine works it also cools the treatment area to make the treatment comfortable. If it happens that you find yourself experiencing pain your Technician will reduce the intensity of the laser. Please note the use of anesthetic cream is discouraged.
How Long Does A Session Last?
The duration depends directly on the extent of the area(s) to be treated.
The larger the area, the longer the treatment time. For small areas, such as the upper lip or underarms, it should take approximately fifteen minutes.
After The Your Session
Immediately after the session, some redness and slight bruising may appear but will disappear quickly.
-
The area treated needs to be kept hydrated during the days following the session.
-
The hair follicle will be ejected in the 2 weeks following the treatment.
-
Avoid exposing the area treated to the sun for the entire duration of the treatment.
-
The use of sunscreen is recommended.
